My research paper was about the benefits of working with children in small groups at a younger age. Through the research that I conducted, I found out that the smaller the group one is working in tends to be, the more individual attention one receives, and the better they will do in school moving forward. The smaller the group the more open one is willing to be and there are more opportunities for children to be able to relate to some of the situations that they are trying to deal with. With there being more programs in school that allow for students to be pulled from class, there are more opportunities for a student to be focused on one-on-one and the more likely they are to improve in a specific area. This is the basis for why I am doing what I have chosen for my project this year. I want to be a part of the reasons that students make continual improvement in the area of self esteem. I know that while I was in elementary school, I would have loved to have a program like this because self esteem is something that I have never had an easy time with.
"At the elementary level, working in small groups on important topics can be extremely beneficial to the children. Working with children on developmental skills can be crucial at a young age due to the fact that they are learning the most at this time and they can be influenced the most. The way in which a child is influenced at this age can be the most important of any time in their lives. Barbra Tamori states, “If one can teach students personal, social and interactional skills, then our students may be better prepared for the future.” (Tomori, 1995). She is saying that the more we teach students when it pertains to social skills and how to interact early on, then the better they will be at it when they are older. "
This is a portion of my research paper that I continually look back on while working with my students. This explains some of the most important reasons for working with younger children in small groups. The increase in individual attention is one of the most discussed reasons for why it is beneficial to work in smaller groups. It also explains how it can be helpful for when they grow up and they have to be able to handle many more social interactions with strangers that can affect their future. I tried to focus on not only their self esteem, but showing them how to communicate with others and develop the social skills they would need.
