Dear Mrs. Boutilier:
For my capstone project, I am going to be travelling to South End Elementary School in Southington. I will be there Tuesday and Thursday each week from 1:30pm-3pm when I get out of school working with a specific group seven of students each time. I will be working on a variety of different things with them. Not only will we be working on school work, but we will also work on personal skills and ways to help them cope with lots of the things going on in their home lives and internal issues that need to be worked on. I want to make a difference in these kids lives and be the kind of person in their lives that I didn't get the opportunity to have in my life at that age. We will be doing multiple lessons throughout the year including small group and partner projects, journaling, worksheets, and group discussions. These will be a mixture of projects I come up with myself and some that I may find online
The question I am focusing on is: How does working with students in smaller groups on a regular basis affect them in the long run? This pertains to my project because I plan to work with small groups of third and fourth graders, not only on their school work, but their self esteem as well. Some of the artifacts that I plan on collecting are photos with the kids during work time, group discussions, and of them holding some of their work, as well as worksheets, lesson plans, and letters sent home.
My mentor for my project is Ms. Caitlin Kelley. Her email is [email protected]. She is a third grade teacher at South End Elementary School, which really works because she has already had most of the students that I want to work with, so she has a good idea of who can benefit most from time with me. We have already had a couple of meetings and we are really on the same page about everything. My learning stretch is going to be communicating with the parents and really trying to keep them involved. It is important to keep the parents involved. It will also be creating the lesson plans and introducing them to the kids so that I can help them boost their self esteem and becoming more comfortable with who they are.
Sincerely,
Brooke Schloesser
