For my job shadow, I worked with the school psychologist at the Middle School of Plainville. I spent a day with Justine Misseri over the last summer because during the school year I did not have much time to get to the school. I got to see how she ran her summer school program and how she was helping the students develop their social skills. I also was able to work with her co-teacher, Kayla Nascimento, and they taught me a lot about how to hold oneself in front of a group of kids. Afterwards, I was able to talk to her about daily life in the school and what she usually does while the school year is in session. She gave me a run down of how she works with the kids and what she does with them to balance her day with meetings and paperwork.
We also got to talk about some of the things that she works with during the summer while doing the program. Justine works closely with my mother during the school year because my mother is one of the Special Education / Behavior teachers at the Middle School of Plainville, and that was one of the things that we got to discuss. There were many different parts of her job that stuck out to me that made me consider this career. However, in the end, it was not enough to change my mind completely from what I have known that I've wanted to do for the last several years.
This job shadow was an excellent learning experience and I was able to gain a lot of new knowledge from it, and for that I am grateful. Although it did not change my plan for the career I wish to pursue, I was able to shadow someone who I can consider myself lucky to know. I hope one day I can be someone as knowledgeable and inspirational as Justine. I hope that within next summer if she runs the same program, I am able to go back and volunteer as I did this past summer. It was an experience unlike any other and I am grateful to have had the chance to see what it was like to work with the students.
